How to get Perfect Wedding Photos - Part 1

Bridal Prep Photos are some of the most important photos of your wedding day.  They are your last photographs taken before you become a married woman and they set the scene to your amazing day.

I LOVE taking Bridal Prep photos - and Ian has an awesome time with the boys too. (don't worry we haven't forgotten the guys!  A Grooms Prep post is coming soon!)  Oh the benefits of having two photographers!  The preparations are so much fun and provide such wonderful relaxed moments between the Bride and her maids as well as the Groom and his best friends, they are certainly moments not to miss.

Here are a few quick tips to ensure you get the very best Bridal Prep Photos - EVER!

  • Allow yourself extra time.  You really don't want to be rushed.  This time is special.  It's momentous. It's exciting, emotional, fun, nerve-wracking and wonderful.  Preparation photographs set the scene for the entire wedding day - and your wedding album!
  • At Notton house Photography, I always recommend that our Brides give their Hair & Makeup Artist a 'hard stop time'.  This is usually half an hour before they really need to be completely ready.  It gives everyone a little leeway if things do get delayed and extra time for champagne and bridal prep photos if they don't!
  • When choosing your getting ready location, there are a few things you'll need to bear in mind.  Your first thought is probably the distance to the wedding venue if you are unable to get ready there.  Your second thought is probably the big beautiful and comfy bed you get to sleep in and if there is enough space for you and your Bridesmaids to get ready in.  But there are a couple of other things to think about when choosing your getting ready location.  The first tip is to choose a room with as much natural light as possible for your bridal prep photos.  That means as many large windows as possible (that will be getting the sun at the time you are getting ready!). Glass doors are perfect.  Not only does it give a beautiful natural light to your photographs but it also give you that light, airy and romantic look you see in the magazines too.  Oh and your hair and makeup artist will LOVE YOU too!  They need as much natural light to work in as possible!  White or very light coloured walls are also great reflectors so they help create stunning bridal prep photos that can grace the pages of a magazine!

The photographs below are of the Penthouse Suite at the beautiful Empress Hotel on the Isle of Man and it's the most perfect Bridal Prep room!

  • Clear the room.  I get it.  It's your wedding day and you totally do not want to be tidying the room the morning you marry the person of your dreams!  But seriously, spend five minutes throwing away any leftover food, makeup tissues and put the plates and glasses in the sink - or have someone like Ann from Maid for the Bride do it all for you!  If you don't have an 'Ann' (and I strongly suggest you do!) dedicate one or two of your Bridesmaids to be on cleanup duty.  After all, it's your wedding day and you'll want the most beautiful photographs from the Bridal Preparations possible.  You'll also feel MUCH calmer with a clean and organised room to get ready in.
  • Ensure your room is as spacious as possible.  As I mentioned in tip number 3, bigger is definitely better when it come to choosing your getting ready location.  More space + more natural light = happy Bride & stunning bridal prep photos!
  • What are you and your bridesmaids wearing the morning of the wedding?  It's not quite so cool for the guys, but us girls love to be coordinated with each other and this is the perfect time for that.  Whether you choose matching kimono's, monogrammed t-shirts or dressing gowns, Team Bride and Team Groom tops or simply white t-shirts, this can make a HUGE impact on your bridal prep photos.  Remember, if you want light and romantic photographs choose lighter clothing and room decor.
  • Lastly, don't be afraid to let your wedding photographer take your dress outside.  Ok, I know I may have just given you a heart attack, but I can promise you, in the six years I have been photographing weddings, I've never had an accident with a wedding or bridesmaids dress.  The natural sunlight is simply the perfect way to show off the beauty of your wedding dress, and I'll find the perfect location within your wedding venue to take the most gorgeous photographs of it for you.  And I promise, I am SUPER careful!!  If you don't have a space outside to use, I'll look for something sentimental or beautiful inside your Bridal Preparation location.

I took this photo at the Brides Mother's house - and found a beautiful portrait of her parents wedding day to include in the image along with her wedding dress.
